If you are looking for a vehicle transfer fee calculator for WA, the total cost of transferring a car has two parts: a small flat transfer fee and vehicle licence duty, which most people call stamp duty. The flat fee is currently around $20.50, and the duty is calculated based on the vehicle’s purchase price, starting at 2.75% and rising to 6.5% on dearer cars. Use the calculator on this page to get your exact total in seconds.

Every week at Sell My Car Pro we buy vehicles across Perth and lodge the transfers ourselves, paying out the duty, the transfer fee and any finance owing as part of the deal, so these are the exact figures we work with daily, not theory. Our calculator above does the maths, and this guide explains what you pay, how the duty is worked out, who is exempt, and how the transfer happens through the WA Department of Transport. It gives you a clear estimate before you buy or sell.

Duty is charged on the dutiable value: what the vehicle would reasonably sell for on the open market, free of finance. If you paid a mate's-rates price below market, RevenueWA can reassess on the higher figure, so we use whichever is higher. For dealer purchases, delivery and processing charges included in the price count too.

How WA vehicle licence duty is calculated

Vehicle licence duty (often called stamp duty) is charged under the Duties Act 2008 whenever a vehicle is licensed or a licence is transferred in WA. The buyer pays it, and the Department of Transport collects it along with the transfer fee.

Deadlines, penalties and the transfer process
    WhoDeadline
Seller lodges their side of the transfer (MR9 blue copy or online)7 days from sale
Buyer lodges their side (MR9 red copy or online)14 days from sale
Buyer pays the Transfer of Vehicle Licence invoice (duty + fee)28 days from issue

Miss the 28-day payment window and the Department of Transport issues an infringement notice (currently $100) on top of the duty and transfer fee. Ignore that for another 28 days and a final demand with extra fees follows, then the Fines Enforcement Registry.

Under-declaring the value is an offence with a maximum penalty of $20,000 plus penalty tax of up to 100% of the duty shortfall - and the seller can be held jointly liable.

Light vehicles can be transferred online through DoTDirect; heavy vehicles over 4.5 tonnes must be transferred on the paper MR9 form. You must be 16 or over to take over a light vehicle and 18 or over for a heavy vehicle.

Before you buy, a $2 PPSR check confirms there's no finance owing on the vehicle.

What You Pay To Transfer A Car In WA

The total cost of a vehicle transfer in Western Australia is made up of two charges. The first is the vehicle transfer fee, a flat administrative fee of around $20.50 that covers the Department of Transport updating the licence into the new owners’ names. It is the same for every person buying a car, whether you buy privately or from a dealership, and whether it is a new or used car.

The second, and much larger, charge is vehicle licence duty, sometimes called transfer duty, the state tax payable under the Duties Act whenever a vehicle changes hands. This payment is separate from the ongoing vehicle licence fee you pay each year to keep the car registered. This is where most of the money goes, because it is based on the value of the car rather than a flat rate. Generally the buyer is responsible for paying both the transfer fee and the duty when transferring the vehicle registration into their name.

How WA Vehicle Licence Duty Is Calculated

WA stamp duty works on a tiered system, and the duty is calculated based on the dutiable value of the vehicle. The dutiable value is usually the vehicle’s purchase price you actually pay, or the market value if that is higher, so you cannot lower the duty by recording a bargain price on paper. You will need proof of the purchase price, and the value is assessed as at the contract date.

The stamp duty rates for light vehicles are straightforward. A car valued up to $25,000 attracts 2.75% duty. Between $25,001 and $50,000 the rate climbs on a sliding scale, worked out as 2.75 plus the value above $25,000 divided by 6,666.66. For example, a $30,000 car lands at about 3.5%, so roughly $1,050 in duty. Over $50,000, a flat 6.5% applies. Heavy vehicles over 4.5 tonnes are taxed at 3% of the dutiable value, capped at $12,000. These duty rates mean the car stamp duty paid can add up to significant costs, so it is worth knowing the figure first.

Exemptions And Refunds On Vehicle Duty

Not every transfer is subject to duty. In certain circumstances a vehicle transfer is exempt or eligible for concessions, and you apply through the Department of Transport. Common exemptions include a vehicle passed on through a will, where only nominal duty applies, and transfers between spouses or de facto partners. Pensioners and eligible concession card holders, vehicles fitted with a wheelchair hoist or ramp, and charity vehicles can also be exempt, as can a car already registered in your name in another state or territory. Certain caravans designed for human habitation are not subject to the duty either.

Duty that has already been paid can sometimes be refunded, for example where a sale is cancelled or reassessed, though time limits such as three months can apply to some transactions, so check your eligibility with the Department. Any refund is paid to your nominated bank account.

How To Transfer A Vehicle And Pay The Duty

The process is quick if you move fast. As the buyer, you must notify the Department of Transport within 14 days of taking ownership to avoid penalties. You lodge the change of ownership form, pay the transfer fee and the licence duty, and the licence is updated into your name. You can pay through the Department or your financial institution as part of the application process.

For your exact figure, use the vehicle transfer fee calculator for WA at the top of this page, then confirm it against the Department of Transport’s official duty calculator before you pay. The seller has duties too: you should lodge a notice of disposal so you are not liable for the car after you sell it, which our guide on transfer of ownership in WA explains in full. When you sell your car to us, we take care of all of this for you. On a recent fleet purchase we documented, our Westcool buy, we lodged the transfer and handled the duty paperwork on every vehicle so the seller never touched a form.

    Frequently Asked Questions

These are the questions Perth buyers and sellers ask us most about transfer costs.

How Much Does It Cost To Transfer A Car In WA?

The total cost is the flat transfer fee, currently around $20.50, plus vehicle licence duty based on the car’s value. On a $20,000 car that is about $550 in duty, so roughly $570 all up. On a $45,000 car the duty is far higher, which is why it pays to calculate it first.

How Is Vehicle Licence Duty Calculated In WA?

It is calculated on the dutiable value, which is the purchase price or market value, whichever is higher. The rate is 2.75% up to $25,000, a sliding rate between $25,001 and $50,000, and 6.5% above $50,000. Heavy vehicles are charged 3%, capped at $12,000.

Who Is Exempt From Vehicle Licence Duty?

Transfers through a deceased estate, between spouses or de facto partners, to eligible pensioners, for disabled-use vehicles, to endorsed charities, and for vehicles already registered in your name interstate can all be exempt. You apply to the Department of Transport with proof of your eligibility.
